I Love My English Class
Oct. 2nd, 2006 02:57 pmThis is seriously not sarcasm.
On the first day, we were asked to say why we picked AP English over the other choices offered to us. An honest response would have been:
- My junior year English teacher approved.
- Everybody else is doing it, so I'm surrendering to peer pressure.
- The more demanding class might, in the little time that's left for it, give me an edge in writing my college essays.
In a surprising break from my typical habits, I actually tried slightly harder than usual to stick to the truth, leaving out only the second point. My effort to be honest seems to have been tolerated (laughed at, but tolerated).
A few days later, I had to bring in an object or a photo that represented me metaphorically and write a paragraph about it. I (predictably) brought in a fluffy. The best choice, though, has to have been the student who brought in a toy Megazord.
Finally, we just had our essay tests on Catch-22 handed back about a week ago. While talking about our work, the teacher said something I thought was worth saving:
"Some of you just kept writing 'society', 'society', 'society', but you never bothered to define... what? [brief pause] 'Society'!"
I'm ecstatic to have found someone else who thinks it's dangerous to throw words around without first declaring what they're supposed to mean. Now if only the NHS would agree with us...
